As a lawyer, Ruth Bader Ginsburg first appeared before the Supreme Court in Frontiero v. Richardson, in 1973. She advocated for Sharron Frontiero, an Air Force lieutenant who had been denied benefits for her husband that were granted to men for their wives. « I ask no favor for my sex, » Ginsburg told the nine men on the bench, quoting the nineteenth-century women’s-rights advocate Sarah Grimké. « All I ask of our brethren is that they take their feet off our necks. »
